Far-Ultraviolet Imaging of the Field Star Population in the Large Magellanic Cloud with HST

چکیده
We present an analysis of the deepest pure-UV observations with the highest angular resolution ever performed, a set of 12 exposures with the HST WFPC2 and F160BW filter obtained in parallel observing mode, which cover ∼12 square arcminutes in the LMC, North of the bar and in the “general field” regime of the LMC. The 341 independent measurements of 198 objects represent an accumulated exposure of ≥2 10 sec and reveal stars as faint as mUV ≃22 mag. The observations show that ∼2/3 of the UV emission from the LMC is emitted by our HST-detected UV stars in the field, i.e., not in clusters or associations. We identified optical counterparts in the ROE/NRL photometric catalog for ∼ 1/3 of the objects. The results are used to discuss the nature of these UV sources, to estimate the diffuse UV emission from the LMC as a prototype of dwarf galaxies, and to evaluate the contamination by field stars of UV observations of globular and open clusters in the LMC. We find that the projected density of UV stars in the general field of the LMC is a few times higher than in the Galactic disk close to the Sun. Combining our data with observations by UIT allows us to define the stellar UV luminosity function from mUV=8 to 18 mag, and to confirm that the field regions in the LMC have been forming stars at a steady rate during the last 1 Gyr, with an IMF close to the Salpeter law. Ultraviolet and Optical Observations of Ob Associations and Field Stars in the Southwest Region of the Large Magellanic Cloud
Using ultraviolet photometry from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT ) combined with photometry and spectroscopy from three ground-based optical datasets we have analyzed the stellar content of OB associations and field areas in and around the regions N 79, N 81, N 83, and N 94 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. In particular, we compare data for the OB association Lucke-Hodge 2 (LH 2) to deter...
متن کاملLow Mass Pre - Main Sequence stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud - II : HST - WFPC 2 observations of two fields in the 30 Doradus region ⋆
As a part of an ongoing effort to characterise the young stellar populations in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we present HST-WFPC2 broad and narrow band imaging of two fields with recent star formation activity in the Tarantula region. A population of objects with Hα and/or Balmer continuum excess was identified. On account of the intense Hα emission (equivalent widths up to several tens of Å), i...
متن کاملCentral Stars of Planetary Nebulae in the Large Magellanic Cloud: a Far-uv Spectroscopic Analysis
We observed seven central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPN) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), and performed a model-based analysis of these spectra in conjunction with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectra in the UV and optical range to determine the stellar and nebular parameters. Most of the objects show wind features, and they have eff...
متن کاملSynthetic High-resolution Line Spectra of Star-forming Galaxies below 1200å
We have generated a set of far-ultraviolet stellar libraries using spectra of OB and Wolf-Rayet stars in the Galaxy and the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud. The spectra were collected with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer and cover a wavelength range from 1003.1 to 1182.7 Å at a resolution of 0.127 Å. The libraries extend from the earliest Oto late-O and early-B stars for the Magella...
متن کاملThe Star Formation History of the Large Magellanic Cloud
We present the first-ever global, spatially-resolved reconstruction of the star formation history (SFH) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), based on the application of our StarFISH analysis software to the multiband photometry of twenty million of its stars from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey. The general outlines of our results are consistent with previously published results: follo...
